 VIOLENCE AGAINST THE TRANSGENDER COMMUNITY

Visibility, which is paramount to the acceptance of the transgender community, often comes at great risk, an ever-present danger in the process of living one’s truth. Violence against the transgender community has risen exponentially since 2016. Much of the fatal violence against the community is aimed at transgender women, particularly trans women of color. In every city where B. Proud has photographed the extraordinary, loving couples, she has also visited and documented the site where a trans person has been murdered. The images are captured after several moments of reflection with respect to the victims and a hope for a brighter tomorrow. While the portraits of Transcending Love offer the viewer an easily palatable glimpse into a community that is globally misunderstood, these images referencing violence emphasize that it is critical to the safety of an entire community that we, as a society, come together to embrace our transgender siblings.
